Trashing the Party

Nader is now in the race as an independent…once again proving that it is all about himself and not about the Green Party or any kind of movement. With him is Matt Gonzalez, who has apparently forgotten that the GP from many states descended on San Francisco to get him elected, and only the [...]

The haunted world of science

My mother enjoys these shows on television which purport to show hauntings and the paranormal. I do too, really, owing to my own experience “seeing a UFO” when I was much younger. I write that in quotes now because other circumstantial evidence has led me to conclude that I probably dreamed the whole [...]

Book Talk

I just finished reading “Lolita”, which I found truly disturbing.
It was particularly interesting because much of the criticism I’d heard about the book before was that it wasn’t an issue of pedophilia, it was a matter of every character (or every major character) in the book being somehow unlikable and bringing destruction on him or [...]

Update

Just following up on my call to Judge Silkworth’s office, as I received a return call a couple of days afterwards.
If you recall that post, the weather started to get bad about 6 PM. Not surprisingly, there were no judges actually working in their offices by the time the election board decided to [...]

The System in Action

Yesterday I spent the day Enabling Democracy. I acted as a check in judge for the Maryland primary elections.
For the most part it was a very positive experience. From 7 AM to 8 PM the experience was overwhelmingly positive, marred by my own ill health… after about 6 hours my ‘recovery’ [...]

Do the math – PLEASE.

One of the huge problems with politics is that there is no adherence of late on facts. I blame this largely on the neoconservative movement and their current criminals in the administration of our country, and to a lesser extent the Republican Party in general, who collectively decided that if actual facts did not [...]

Cynical observations…

I used to feel that there were two types of friends. Those who will ‘tell you to your face’, and those who won’t. Since I tend to err on the side of directness myself, I tended to choose the first sort because, at least, I knew what their issues were. [...]

…and we’ll never be ‘cool’ again

Still recovering from the cold from beyond the 8th DimensionTM. I’ve had time to muse on various things (which is always dangerous).
In the past 24 hours one child has been recognized as ‘indispensable’ by  the director of the school play (she’s on tech crew this time around).  The other one was told that there [...]
